I have chose to compare the Saskatchewan Curriculum document with the British Columbia document.
- Upon first glance, the BC document has more colour and more appeal to the eye. It is short but is condensed in a way that you can understand and find things easily. The Saskatchewan document is long and sometimes tricky to find certain things.
- The competencies in BC’s document outline the following : Communication, Thinking, and Personal & Social. This differs greatly from the Sask competencies which include: Developing Thinking, Think and Learn contextually, think and learn creatively, think and learn critically, and developing identity and independence. I searched the document high and low and was not able to find anything about BAL’s.
- The site for BC seems up to date and very knowledgeable about the learning goals they wish to achieve. They state that they are a concept based and competency driven curriculum. They have a lot of learning resources and that outline Indigenous learning and development which is amazing. The Saskatchewan document should be revised to have the same Indigenous learnings and resources that the BC one has.
- Each grade and subject that you click on for the BC document outlines their competencies and then they have Big Ideas that are specified to that certain grade and subject which is very neat. It also outlines the learning standards that students should be achieving in that certain grade and subject. In each subject pdf, there were no outcomes or indicators. The document was very short and only outlines the basic topic or things that students should be learning. It seems that it is up to the teacher to do what they will with this information.
- In the BC document it outlines a lot of Indigenous resources. It also outlines a multitude of resources for teachers to discover under the “what’s new” tab.
- After reading both documents, I actually prefer the BC curriculum. It looks way more neat, tidy, appealing, and up to date. I like that the documents are not long and do not tell you the specific things that you must teach. I like that it gives you topics and you can approach it in whatever creative way that you like. I also like their attention to Indigenous education.
