165 Exploration of AS OF & FOR learning

  • For is the ongoing process of gathering and interpreting evidence about students learning for the purpose of determining where students are in their learning. I am in my third year of education so I have had the opportunity to use this already in my practicums. Through my own education journey I have recalled teachers using KWL charts, journal entries, or specific questions and worksheets to asses and gage where I was at in my learning.
  • As is the process of developing and supporting student metacognition. Students are actively engaged in the assessment process. Then they can assist in monitoring their own learning. Teachers have used things like journal entries, exit slips, sharing circles, and basic discussions or conversations with their students.
  • Of is the processing of collecting and interpreting evidence for the purpose of summarizing their learning at a certain point in time to make judgments about the quality of their learning. You assign value to the assessment. Teacher have done this through rubrics, essays, exams, quizzes, final projects and many more. You can use a multitude of things for the OF learning as long as you are assigning a formative grade to it and it assessing the specific content you have taught.
  • I have used a KWL chart as a form of for learning. For learning is for the teacher to assess what the students already know. This will help you to determine where your teaching needs to go. I have used As through journal entries and conversations/questions during teaching. This is important for the teacher to monitor where the student currently is in their understanding. This is also a great way for the student to realize the pace that they are at. They can self-assess where they are at in their own learning. I used Of assessment for the food classes that I taught. I gave them a grade based on a rubric and the teacher showed me how to enter their grades into the school system. This is important not only for the teacher and the student but for their parents as well to see a final ‘formative grade’ for the work that they have done and the things that they have learned. It is important to show the students your rubric or go over your direct expectations before they complete a formative assignment.
