379 Analysis of using Critical Lenses

I think that it is important to use different critical lenses in order to analyze texts and readings differently. The way we analyzed readings differently in this class helped me to visualize them in a way that I never would have before. I think that if I ever get to teach ELA, I will be using as many critical lenses as I can. I think it depends on the age group and the piece of literature that you are analyzing. I think that in order to use these lenses your students have to be at a higher critical thinking level. They also need to understand what each lense means and how to analyze something using that lense. My favourite lense is the feminist lense because I am a strong feminist and I love bringing light to woman empowerment and issues. I realize now that I have been using some of these lenses without even knowing it. When you use different lenses with your students you can show them that everything is up for interpretation and there is always more than one meaning to something. Using these lenses will not only increase their development of a critical literacy but also their increase their metacognition.

  1. These lenses also help student arrive at higher levels of critical thinking. You will need to introduce them carefully and at the level your students are at, but they can certainly be used with younger students as well. And many of us have been using the lenses without knowing it.
